A CAGE Code (Commercial and Government Entity code) is a five-character identifier composed of letters and numbers assigned to companies doing business with the U.S. Department of Defense, NATO, or other allied defense organizations. Though it originated in defense procurement, CAGE codes are now widely used across federal contracting and appear in SAM.gov registrations for virtually all contractors.
How to Get a CAGE Code
For businesses registering in the United States, a CAGE code is assigned automatically as part of the SAM.gov entity registration process. You do not need to apply separately. For entities outside the United States, a NATO CAGE (NCAGE) code is obtained through the relevant national authority. CAGE code assignment is free.
Where CAGE Codes Are Used
CAGE codes appear on DoD contracts, DD-250 and WAWF receiving reports, facility security clearance records maintained by DCSA, and various defense logistics systems. They serve as the linking identifier across DoD acquisition and supply chain databases. Contractors verifying subcontractor registrations or researching competitors can search the publicly available CAGE code database through SAM.gov.
CAGE Code vs. UEI
The CAGE code and UEI serve different functions in different systems. The UEI is the government-wide business identifier for contracting and grants, maintained by SAM.gov. The CAGE code is used primarily in DoD logistics and contracting systems. For most federal proposals involving defense agencies, both identifiers will be required.
Multiple CAGE Codes
A company can hold multiple CAGE codes if it operates multiple distinct business locations, has separately identified divisions, or has acquired other companies with existing codes. Each code is associated with a specific entity identity and address. Managing multiple codes requires keeping each registration current in SAM.gov.

Do I need a CAGE code for non-DoD contracts?
A CAGE code is assigned automatically during SAM.gov registration regardless of whether you intend to pursue DoD work. Many civilian agency solicitations also request it. In practice, holding an active SAM.gov registration means you already have one, so this distinction rarely creates a practical obstacle.
Can a company have more than one CAGE code?
